Layla's Story...

Layla is a 2 yr old female rescued from an Ohio shelter who said a back injury made her unadoptable and without a rescue coming forward to help her, she would be euthanized. When OBR met her at the shelter she could not stand, nor could she walk. All she could do was wag her tail and look at you with her sad eyes, begging for a chance. Not knowing the severity of her situation, nor whether she would be able to walk again, OBR felt despite everything, this little girl needed love during her final days.

She was immediately transported to a vet hospital who did extensive tests and concluded she had a spinal disease with no cure. Layla's future for walking and playing like a normal two year old didn't look good. Considering the bad news, Layla at least remained hopeful. When tough decisions were being made, she couldn't give up. With no other solution, it looked as though it was time to say good bye. An OBR volunteer went to hold her during the procedure, but when they went to get her from her kennel, she stood up with all her might and walked stumbling, to give them a lick on the cheek. It was an impressive feat and one that showed that she was not leaving this planet, at least not without a fight.

With high doses of steroids Layla has been able to stand and drag her back legs, but this is not a long term solution for her. She needs a doggie wheel chair and a family who is patient and understanding that even though she is "special needs" there is a place for her in this world. She hasn't given up, therefore we should do the same for her. Please help us help her.

Layla's has many vet bills and many more to come, along with the need for a doggie wheel chair. Please help Layla find the help she needs.

Update 10/5/2009

It comes with great sadness to write that Layla's conditioned turned for the worst. Her pain and suffering could no longer be controlled with the steroids and pain medication. Layla no longer tried to play or move around as she did in her video. Sadly after several other tests and expert opinions, it was concluded that the kindest thing we could do for her was allow her to rest in peace. Thank you everyone for your kind support and donations. Layla passed away last week with her foster mom by her side.
